Life Matters Budget

FY2015 (July 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015)

We will attempt to educate the university community on the value of human life in all matters and all situations. We exist to promote a consistent-life ethic which believes in the dignity of all humanity. As such, we are against abortion, unjust war, embryonic stem cell research, abortifacients, capital punishment, euthanasia, human trafficking, the sex trade, poverty, and any action which degrades the dignity of the human being. We exist to not only bring awareness to these issues in our campus community, but to help eradicate them in the community at large.

Income and Revenue

Object Code Requested Recommended Final Description
Revenue-Donations/Other Income (-) $250.00 $250.00 $250.00

Previous experience has shown that members of greater community sympathetic to our agenda (Community, Church, and advocacy groups) are willing to make financial contributions to CMU Life Matters when prompted. We accept donations from political and/or religious entities provided they allow us to use the funds as a secular, apolitical group. Average donations tend to be ~$50.00, however considerably larger donations (>$500.00) have also been received. Variability of donations makes estimating revenue from this source difficult. Here we are reporting expectations of five donations, averaging $50.00 per donation.

Revenue-Rental and Sales Income (-) $40.00 $40.00 $40.00

Sales of Life Matters T-shirts. Previously printed (no acquisition costs). Not a main fund raiser.

Revenue-Fundraising Income (-) $150.00 $100.00 $100.00

Bake Sale fundraising: Proven as effective in college as it is in grade school. Over past three years LM has averaged ~$30-60.00 revenue per sale. We expect to hold three sales in academic 2015.

Sub-Total -$440.00 -$390.00 -$390.00

Advertising

Object Code Requested Recommended Final Description
Ops-Advertising and Publicity (+) $40.00 $0.00 $0.00

Advertising for 2014 MOSAIC forum: Itemized separately from publicity for other Life Matters events on account of the uniquely collaborative nature of the event. CMU Life Matters was approached and asked to participate in the annual discussion forum, hosted by the CMU office of student activities, and Students for a Deliberative Democracy. Along with CMU orgs, MORF and the Humanist League, Life Matters was asked to aide in publicizing the events and representing the 'pro-life' side of this years discussion topic, reproductive rights. Should funding be denied for Life Matters singularly hosted events, we ask separate consideration be given to funding publicity for this event due to its unique, far reaching collaboration with CMU's feminism, and humanism clubs.

This is in S4DD's account.

Ops-Advertising and Publicity (+) $100.00 $30.00 $30.00

Advertising Poster Costs: $.75 per 8.5x11'' color sheet, ~30 sheets per advertised event (through experience flyering in 8 CMU buildings), 3-5 advertised events per year (beginning of semester recruitment, speakers, discussion forums, etc). Over the past three years Life Matters has hosted 2-6 speakers annually, participated in the VERITAS, and MOSAIC campus discussion forums, and attended every activities fair at the beginning of each semester.

UC Third Floor Color Printer ($0.20/page)

Ops-General Supplies (+) $25.00 $25.00 $25.00

Expenses to buy cooking supplies for bake sale. (cookie sheets, wisk, etc). Cookie ingredients will be donated/provided through Life Matters executive members.

Sub-Total $165.00 $55.00 $55.00

Secular, A-political Niche Building

Object Code Requested Recommended Final Description
Ops-Registration and Tournaments (+) $100.00 $100.00 $100.00

Fall conference: The Vita et Veritas conference at Yale University hosted by the student organization "Choose Life at Yale" annually in October. $20.00 per person registration fee. Asking for funds to send five CMU Life Matters members to this conference. CMU Life Matters founder, and current Life Matters Journal chief operator was an invited speaker at last year's conference.

Revenue from Donations towards this. The JFC has only seen one conference expense hit your account in the last 2 fiscal years.

Ops-Registration and Tournaments (+) $100.00 $100.00 $100.00

Spring Conference: "Peace/Love/Justice: A Conference on Life Issues" conference, Philadelphia PA, March. The first specifically secular, apolitical conference in Pennsylvania is being organized by CMU Life Matters founder Aimee Murphy and is being held this year at Vanderbilt Univ. in Philadelphia. Group student registration fees are $20.00 per person (>40%discounted), we are asking for funding to send five members. (funding is not being requested for the annual March for Life in DC as has been in previous years because these conferences are focused on a broader range of life issues, are more secular in audience, and are planned on an academic calendar)

Revenue from Donations towards this.

Ops-Program Expenses (+) $0.00 $0.00 $0.00

Niche Building Explained: Advocacy for Life issues has been traditionally and is currently dominated to the isolated efforts of political (i.e. Amnesty International: War & Death Penalty) and religious (i.e. Christian groups: Abortion) organizations. Comprehensive life issues advocacy, outside of political and/or ideological contexts, is relatively new and quickly growing. CMU Life Matters is in many ways leading the formation of this movement, but at the same time depends on the support of other secular life advocacy communities. (this amount is intentionally zero)

Travel-Other (+) $90.00 $90.00 $90.00

Travel to Yale's Vita et Veritas conference: The government rate of .10$/mile (450x2mi distance) is being requested for one vehicle, carrying 2-5 persons, to make this trip. Lodging can be provided through Life Matters contacts at the host institution. We ask that priority be given to funding the registration fee for this conference over travel expenses.

Travel-Other (+) $60.00 $60.00 $60.00

Travel to Villanova Life/Peace/Justice conference: The government rate of .10$/mile (300x2mi distance) is being requested for one vehicle, carrying 2-5 persons, or $30/person for bus tickets (if less than 3 persons going) to make this trip. Lodging can be provided through Life Matters contacts at the host institution. We ask that priority be given to funding the registration fee for this conference over travel expenses.

Sub-Total $350.00 $350.00 $350.00

CMU Community Activity

Object Code Requested Recommended Final Description
Food Recruitment (+) $75.00 $75.00 $75.00

LM recruitment dinner event: Life Matters is making new member recruitment a top priority in academic 2015. Life Matters has a solid core of executive and regular members but is looking to increase its presence on campus and attract more first and second year students in fall 2015. The office of student activities suggests the effectiveness of holding a formal recruitment event including dinner.

Ops-Event Supplies (+) $100.00 $100.00 $100.00

US Drone Policy awareness campaign: Aimed at increasing awareness in the CMU community of the unacceptable disregard and loss of life associated with our current drone policy (collateral damage and killing without trial primarily). Funding for supplies to make interactive display at well traveled area(s) of campus.

Food-Refreshments for Events (+) $100.00 $100.00 $100.00

Refreshments for speaker events: Refreshments for two speaker events-one women's issues talk ("All Girls Allowed" or Feminist for Life president, Sarin Foster) and one life violence issue (War or Capital Punishment). Speaker funding to be requested separately.

Food-Refreshments for General Body Meetings (+) $0.00 $0.00 $0.00

No funds are being requested for our regular general body meetings.

Ops-Program Expenses (+) $75.00 $75.00 $75.00

Positive Advocacy: Life Matters is committed to making deliberate effort to advocate for as many life issues as possible with positive support where possible. Our previous free hugs during midterms and finals event is a good example of such. We identify these as opportunities to collaborate with other orgs, i.e. 'Project Smile' and/or 'To Write Love on Her Arms.'
