Research

Clay’s research examines the growth of the U.S. economy over the 19th and 20th centuries, including energy issues, air pollution, the resource curse and the impact of climate change.

On March 29, 2017, Dr. Karen Clay, CMU professor of Economics and Public Policy at Heinz College, delivered an Andy Talk titled, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Understanding the Social and Economic Costs of Transporting Crude Oil." Clay's presentation was part of Carnegie Mellon's 2017 Energy Week.

On May 3, 2017, Carnegie Mellon University hosted a policy briefing titled "Pipelines, Trucks, Buses and Automobiles: Where, When, Which?" in Washington, D.C. The event focused on several studies that provide guidance to policymakers for decisions they make related to energy and transportation. In this video, CLay delivers a shorter, more policy-oriented version of her Andy Talk on Crude Oil Transporation.

Karen Clay is a professor of Economics and Policy in CMU's H. John Heinz III College. She discusses her work to understand energy issues from an economic perspective, including the impact of climate change on the U.S. and emerging nations.
