Professors

Kathryn Roeder

Kathryn Roeder is UPMC Professor of Statistics and Life Sciences. Her research team has developed statistical and machine learning methods in a wide spectrum of areas, including high dimensional data problems. Her work focuses on statistical genetics and the genetic basis of complex disease. Recently she developed tools for identifying autism risk genes from de novo mutations as well as associated gene networks. Her methodological work is motivated by studies of schizophrenia, autism and other genetic disorders using data from the transcriptome and whole genome sequencing. She is also interested in the population genetics of human gene diversity.

Graduate Students

Natalie Sauerwald

Natalie is a 4th year Ph.D. student in Computational Biology at Carnegie Mellon University, and holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in Mathematics. Her current research focuses on algorithm development for the study of three-dimensional genome structure, and how it relates to gene regulation. She has been working with the outreach side of Women@SCS for 4 years now, leading TechNights for the last 3 years. Natalie loves research, teaching, and all things outdoors.
