Workshop on Accountability and Open Source Software

Oct 14 –15, 2025

This workshop was organized on Oct 14 – 15 on campus in Carnegie Mellon University to inspire an exciting research agenda for scholars, meaningful organizing and stakeholder engagement ideas for practitioners, and engaging conversations for all. We problematized the notion of accountability in open source ecosystems, and considered different individual and organizational actors such as maintainers, users, contributors, as well as foundations, sponsors, and other for-profit organizations. As entry points to this complex and broad research area, we discussed the dynamic ways in which accountability manifests within different contexts, explored the relationships among policy, sustainability, and governance-related concerns, and explored how such macro-level concerns align with or challenge micro-level dynamics in open source communities.

The workshop report is available with more details on workshop discussions, agenda, and participants.
