What is Zipcar?
Zipcar is the world’s largest car sharing service, offering self-service, on-demand cars by the hour or day. Since 2000, when Zipcars first hit the road, more than 120,000 consumers and businesses have joined.  Zipcar currently operates 3,500 vehicles in London and 14 North American states and provinces, including key metro areas such as Boston, New York City, Washington, DC, Chicago, Toronto, Minneapolis and San Francisco.

Why did Carnegie Mellon pick Zipcar?
To provide a new, alternative service to having a car on campus, the Transportation subcommittee of the Green Practices Committee looked at car sharing programs and selected Zipcar in Summer 2007 because of their technology and website, that cars are located on campus and dedicated to our campus community users, and their track record of providing successful car sharing programs at many of our peer institutions such as MIT, Harvard, Columbia, Georgetown and Chicago.

Can anyone join Zipcar?
Yes!  All faculty, students and staff can join Zipcar, you only need to be 18+ years old with a valid driver's license for at least two years.  Drivers may have no more than two incidents (moving violations plus accidents) in the past three years and no more than one in the past 18 months.   Drivers with international licenses must provide copies of their records from the relevant authorities.  Zipcar does not require parental consent or additional liability coverage for membership.

What is the cost to join Zipcar?
The membership fee to join Zipcar is $35 annually. Carnegie Mellon community members do not pay an application fee.

Can I get a business membership and use Zipcar for business travel?
At this time, all annual memberships are personal memberships.  We continue to evaluate departmental memberships.  A Zipcar can be used for business purposes.  A member is emailed a summary of charges after each reservation which can be submitted via an expense report for reimbursement.

How does this all work?
You join Zipcar by completing an application.  Zipcar processes your application and does the driving record check, and notifies you within a day or two of whether your application has been accepted.  Once accepted you will receive a “Zipcard” in the mail that will let you access the vehicles when you have an approved reservation.  You then go on-line to make reservations.  At the time your reservation begins you go to the vehicle and tap your “Zipcard” on the windshield, and the car unlocks and away you go!  At the end of your trip you must return the car to the same location you got it.  You will be emailed a summary of your charges for your reservation.

The vehicles are located in the EAST CAMPUS GARAGE.  Simply stop in the garage, enter the vehicle you have reserved with ZipCar, and press the "help" button at the gate to exit.  DO NOT PAY TO USE THE GARAGE.  IF YOU PAY TO EXIT, YOU WILL NOT BE REIMBURSED BY P&TS.
