CMNI Welcomes Two New Faculty: Kate Hong and Matt Smith

The Carnegie Mellon Neuroscience Institute is excited to welcome two new faculty members on board: Kate Hong, who will join in January 2020 as an Assistant Professor jointly in CMNI and Biological Sciences; and Matt Smith, who will also join in January 2020 as an Associate Professor with tenure in CMNI and Biomedical Engineering.

In a message to the CMNI community on Friday, May 13, director Dr. Barbara Shinn-Cunningham wrote:

Dear CMNI colleagues—

It is with great pleasure that I share the news that two new faculty, Kate Hong and Matt Smith, will be joining the Carnegie Mellon Neuroscience Institute this coming academic year.

Kate studies the neural circuits underlying sensory-guided behaviors using a rodent model. She will be moving here from NYC, where she is currently a postdoc in the lab of Randy Bruno at Columbia. She did a brief postdoc at Children’s Hospital in Boston after completing her PhD in Neurobiology in the Harvard laboratory of Josh Sanes. As a fellow Brown University grad, I am especially happy to welcome Kate, who will join CMU in January 2020 as an Assistant Professor jointly in CMNI and Biological Sciences.

Matt is well known in the Pittsburgh neuroscience scene, having first moved to Pittsburgh as a postdoc in Tai Sing’s laboratory in 2003 after completing his PhD with Tony Movshon (NYU). Matt’s work explores the dynamics of neural processing in the visual system. Currently an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh, he will be moving his lab down the road to the Mellon Institute this coming January. Matt will be joining us as an Associate Professor with tenure in CMNI and Biomedical Engineering.
