How can we reduce catering food waste?
Catering companies are required to make enough food to feed every event attendee, but what if someone doesn't show up or if the event is suddenly canceled? The excess food, which cannot be delivered to food pantries or sold elsewhere, then winds up in a landfill.
Considering the challenges of food disposal in catering and restaurant kitchens, the student teams designed Bingley Bin, a disposal bin that processes excess food to make a low-cost, premium pet food.

The Bingley Bin is a climate-controlled bin designed to contain and segment food waste without hindering the kitchen's production processes. Kitchen workers deposit excess food into the Bingley Bin funnel, where it is segmented, sealed, and stored for pet food. The kitchens are paid to use the bin, allowing the pet food company the leniency to be selective about what foods should be deposited into the bin.
