Carnegie Mellon University

A Next-Generation Home for Revolutionary Collaboration

The Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences will host faculty, staff and students from:
Department of Biological Sciences • Department of Chemistry • Ray and Stephanie Lane Computational Biology Department • Neuroscience Institute • Language Technologies Institute • Machine Learning Department • Institute for Contemporary Art Pittsburgh

The Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences is where science, technology, art and creativity will converge in new and exciting ways.

Designed to spark collaboration and positioned as a gateway to campus that will anchor a prominent city intersection, the building will help CMU to advance a new era of data-driven research, creative expression and cross-disciplinary education while removing barriers between the university and its surrounding community.

Co-located in the Hall of Sciences will be researchers and educators from the Mellon College of Science, the School of Computer Science and the Institute for Contemporary Art Pittsburgh, fostering an environment for partnership across disciplines unlike anywhere on campus — or around the world.

Launched by a $75 million lead gift by the Richard King Mellon Foundation, the Hall of Sciences is being designed and built with flexibility in mind, allowing spaces to be configured to mobilize quickly to answer emerging problems and respond to new avenues of discovery.

“Carnegie Mellon University thrives at the intersection of science and art. The Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences is no exception, expertly intertwining the worlds of creativity and critical thinking for society’s gain.”

Farnam Jahanian, CMU president

Anchoring the southeast corner of Forbes Avenue and Craig Street, next to the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History, the Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences will be a welcoming destination for both the campus and Pittsburgh communities, offering event, exhibition and gathering spaces.

Through its proximity to CMU colleagues in other disciplines, including the College of Engineering and Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the building will provide a physical link to the heart of CMU’s Pittsburgh campus and will spark collaborations across fields.
