Randy Diehl has been a leader in uncovering the ways through which processes of audition, learning, and cognition support perception of speech and other complex sounds. His influence has a wide reach. He has been awarded multiple research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Founation, and other organizations. Randy has been a generous mentor to several generations of scientists and earned several prestigious teaching awards.

Randy earned his bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Illinois and his doctorate from the University of Minnesota. He joined the faculty at The University of Texas at Austin in 1975, where he served as Department Chair from 1995-1999. During that time the Psychology Department expanded to construct a state-of-the-art research and teaching home in the Sarah M. and Charles E. Seay Building. Since 2007, Randy has served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. In this role, he has championed efforts to build the college a new home, led a task force for improving Undergraduate Graduation rates, established a Humanities Research Award to support scholarship, and attracted world-class faculty to the institution.

Randy's colleagues, students, collaborators and friends met for an exciting program of research, reminiscing, roasting, and fun to celebrate Randy's many contributions to the field. This two-day workshop included talks inspired by Randy’s contributions as well as opportunities to socialize and share apocryphal stories of Randy’s deeds. It took place at the University of Texas at Austin.
