CMU Celebrates Pride Month

Dear Members of the Carnegie Mellon University Community:

Happy Pride Month! At Carnegie Mellon, we honor Pride Month by uplifting the voices of the LGBTQIA+ community and taking time to learn and understand the history and importance of this month. Throughout June, partners across the university will come together to host and support events and activities that celebrate Pride and honor the legacy of queer activism.

My team in the Office of the Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer, along with our campus and community partners, is delighted to invite you to events that honor and support our LGBTQIA+ community throughout the month of June. 2023 Pride Keynote Lecture and Reception with Hugh Ryan on June 7 at 12 p.m.

Back by popular demand, Hugh Ryan is the author of “The Women’s House of Detention: A Queer History of a Forgotten Prison,” winner of a 2023 Stonewall Book Award from the American Library Association. His first book, “When Brooklyn Was Queer,” was a New York Times Editor’s Pick. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, Tin House, Buzzfeed, the LA Review of Books, Out Magazine and many others. He will join us in person for his lecture “Where Are We Now and How Did We Get Queer?” which looks at the changing nature of LGBTQ+ identity in America today, and how this strange, exciting and sometimes frightening moment we are in has direct parallels to the changes that happened in queer identity at the end of the 19th century.

Following the keynote, attendees are invited to stay for a light reception with hors d’oeuvres and refreshments and engage with each other in community with our keynote speaker. Register to attend.
