Title IX Initiatives for the Coming Year

Dear Members of the Carnegie Mellon Community:

We write to welcome each of you to the new academic year. This fall, as we re-engage with in-person learning, teaching, research, and working on campus for the first time in 18 months with our full community, we are experiencing a new normal for campus life. Each of us plays a vital role in creating an atmosphere of mutual respect in classrooms, social events, and workspaces on our collective campus and we are writing today to share information about resources and support the university provides to help achieve a sense of welcome and inclusion for all.

The Office of Title IX Initiatives protects and upholds gender equity on our campus by educating, working to prevent, and responding to sexual misconduct and gender discrimination. Our commitment to the community is clear: we will not tolerate sexual harassment and sexual violence as they are counter to our core values. We remain steadfast in our dedication to support all community members impacted by misconduct, including dating or domestic violence, stalking, sexual harassment or sexual assault, and sexual exploitation.

This year, the Office of Title IX Initiatives has become part of the Vice Provost’s Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, led by Dr. Wanda Heading-Grant. This is an exciting shift, as it means we can provide centralized support, education, and the ability to investigate broader claims of harassment, discrimination, and misconduct.

As a result, the Title IX Office staff has grown to include two new investigators, and an existing full-time position has been dedicated to education and outreach. As the office merges under the Vice Provost for DEI, it will collaborate with the campus community to offer broader assistance with education and training surrounding topics related to bias, discrimination, diversity, equity and inclusion.

Title IX concerns can be reported in a variety of ways and in-person and virtual appointments are welcome:

We thank you for your continued commitment to the cultivation of a culture of respect for diverse views and perspectives. We encourage you to be mindful of your peers, colleagues, and students, whose experiences have been varied since the spread of COVID-19 began last year. Our best learning, teaching, and research happens in environments that foster care, accountability, and mutual respect.

Sincerely,
