Tackling Real-world Challenges
In March 2018, Carnegie Mellon University launched a new phase of its Metro21 smart cities initiative: the Metro21 Smart Cities Institute.
The Metro21 Institute is a campus-wide academic center that works with metropolitan and rural communities to tackle some of their most pressing real-world challenges. With its forward-looking approach, the institute brings people, technology and policy together to significantly improve the quality of life for people living in metropolitan areas. The multidisciplinary effort employs research, development and deployment tactics with key partners to create and test smart city solutions.
Since it was founded in 2010, Metro21 has been deeply rooted in community partnerships, particularly within the Pittsburgh region. CMU’s collaborative relationship with the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and other government agencies has produced successful outcomes that are already being implemented in additional metro areas. The Metro21 Institute was created to build on that collaboration and expand the exciting work that has already come out of Metro21.
