MFA Show Today
The campus community and members of the public are invited to the Carnegie Mellon School of Art MFA Show today (Oct 1).
All 18 students in the program are showing their work in 5-minute individual presentations from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry on the first floor of the College of Fine Arts Building. This annual showcase provides an overview of the diverse mix of talent in the graduate program.
These are the artists you will read about in the future, and they are making their mark at Carnegie Mellon today. Stop by and catch a glimpse of the future in the world of art.
CMU Night at the Symphony
Carnegie Mellon and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra extend an invitation to all students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and friends for CMU Night at the PSO on Friday, Oct. 16.
This annual event features a new twist this year as the university welcomes three new leaders to its executive team: Provost Farnam Jahanian; Steve Kloehn, vice president for Marketing and Communications; and Scott Mory, vice president for University Advancement. Guests will have the opportunity to meet them during both receptions.
The evening begins with a 6 p.m. reception in the Heinz Hall Garden, weather permitting, followed by the PSO concert at 8 p.m. The program will be conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier, who will also conduct the CMU Philharmonic in February, and features faculty member Gretchen Van Hoesen as soloist on Ginastera’s Concerto for Harp and Orchestra, Op. 25. Attendees then are invited to gather in the Simmons Regency Room for refreshments.

Tickets start at $15 for students. Faculty, staff, parents, friends and alumni receive a 35 percent discount on tickets. Street Parking Prices Increase
This fall the campus community will observe a change in street parking prices prompted by the ongoing Carnegie Mellon parking study. The new prices, which have been raised by 25 cents, take effect today (Oct. 1) and will impact the following areas:
- Frew Street, excluding the 5000 block: $2.25 per hour;
- Frew Street, 5000 block: $1.50 per hour;
- Margaret Morrison Street: $1.50 per hour;
- Schenley Drive: $1.75 per hour; and
- Tech Street: $2.50 per hour.
Please note that due to the varying prices it is important to use the parking pay station closest to and on the same street as where you park.
The parking study is directed by Tepper School of Business professors Stephen Spear, professor of economics, and Mark Fichman, associate professor of organizational behavior and theory. The research involves periodic adjustments of hourly parking rates based on usage and demand.
New Military Leave Policy Adopted
In support of employees who serve in the U.S. military, CMU has adopted a new policy that will benefit reservists, including those in the National Guard, who receive orders to report for duty for annual active-duty training or for an extended period of time. Certain aspects of the policy will take effect Oct. 1, while others will be effective Jan. 1, 2016. Highlights of the new policy, effective Oct. 1 are:
- The university will pay the staff member’s regular rate of university pay for the first 11 days of a period of military leave (prorated for part-time staff) that run concurrent with the staff member’s regular workdays. Service pay may be retained.
- For periods of activation longer than 11 days of regular workdays but less than six calendar months, the university will pay the difference, if any, between your regular university pay rate and the sum of your military basic pay, housing allowance and subsistence allowance. At the conclusion of the six months, the university pay differential will cease.

PTC Shuttle To No Longer Provide Service to Greenfield
Effective at 7:45 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 15, CMU’s PTC Shuttle will no longer provide direct service to Greenfield due to the closing of the Greenfield Bridge.
The PTC Shuttle will revert to its old route. After the last campus stop at Scaife Hall, the shuttle will proceed directly to the PTC via Schenley Park and Bates Street.
The off-campus stop at Overlook Drive and Greenfield Road also will be eliminated.
CMU’s Greenfield residents are encouraged to use Port Authority (58 Greenfield) for transportation to and from the PTC. They can then board the shuttle at the PTC for direct transportation to campus.
Register for Relay for Life, Oct. 17
The student organization Colleges Against Cancer is hosting the annual Relay for Life event from 6 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, Oct. 17 on the Cut. CMU faculty, staff and their families are welcome to attend. To sign up, visit www.relayforlife.org/pacmu and join the “CMU Faculty and Staff” team. You also can make a donation to the event to help support the American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer.
Flu Vaccine Clinics Have Begun
University Health Services (UHS) has begun its annual flu vaccine clinics. This year, UHS is asking all faculty, staff and students to schedule appointments for flu shots at one of its many clinics being offered. The vaccine cost is covered for faculty and staff and for students on the CMU Student Health Insurance Plan. For students on other health plans and for spouses and partners, the cost is $25 (payable by student account or check).

Discounted Tickets Offered for Phantom Fright Nights, Hallowboo and Haunt at Halloweekends
Staff Council is offering discounted tickets to several halloween events at several theme parks.
You can purchase tickets to Kennywood Park's Phantom Fright Nights, Idlewild Park's Hallowboo and Cedar Point's Haunt at Halloweekends. To view the ticket offers, go to the Staff Council website and click on Benefits & Discounts in the left-hand navigation column. Scroll down and click on Fall Discounts at the bottom of the page.

PSO Offers Discounts for CMU
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is offering discounts to CMU students, faculty and staff for its upcoming shows at Heinz Hall. Students can purchase tickets for $15, and faculty and staff tickets are available for $25.
Oct. 2-4, the music of Ol’ Blue Eyes kicks off the PSO’s 2015-2016 PNC Pops season. Singer, songwriter and pianist Tony DeSare gives the classic hits a modern flair along with the musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony and Pittsburgh native trumpeter Benny Benack III. The music of Henry Mancini, Dean Martin and other favorites are the perfect complement. Bring your Rat Pack to this swingin’ night featuring hits like “Night and Day,” “Moon River,” “My Way” and more.
ORIC Offers Research Conduct Brown Bag Sessions
CMU's Office of Research Integrity and Compliance (ORIC) is sponsoring Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Brown Bag Sessions during the fall semester for faculty, students and staff members. All sessions for the fall semester are from 12 – 1 p.m. in the Cohon University Center. Here's the schedule:
- Wednesday, Oct. 14: Data Management.
- Wednesday, Oct. 21: Intellectual Property at CMU;
- Wednesday, Oct. 28: Protecting America’s Proprietary Information and Sensitive Technologies in an Age of Globalization (presented by a special agent of the FBI); and
- Wednesday, Nov. 11: Using the IRB and Ethical Issues with Research Involving Human Subjects.
