CMU Among Green Power Leaders

Carnegie Mellon ranks second among colleges and universities in the U.S. and 39th among colleges, universities, Fortune 500 companies and local, state and federal government agencies on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership list for its use of wind and solar power. The list highlights the annual green power purchases of leading organizations within the U.S. One hundred percent of the electricity used by CMU comes from wind and solar power.

Campus Conservation

CMU is competing in Campus Conservation Nationals (CCN), an electricity reduction competition on college and university campuses across the U.S. Nine residence halls are included in the contest, which began Feb. 6 and runs through Feb. 27. The residential buildings are: Boss House, Donner House, Hamerschlag House, Henderson House, McGill House, Mudge House, Scobell House, Stever House and Welch House. Each house will have its electricity use measured.

Recycle Mania

CMU also is competing in Recycle Mania 2012. The competition, which began Feb. 6 and runs through March 31, measures recycling efforts of the university community. CMU’s overall recycling rate was 26 percent last year. Recyclables include bottles, cans, paper, cardboard, scrap metal, wood pallets, food composting, batteries, fluorescent lights, athletic shoes and e-waste.
