Launching the Global Search for Vice Provost for Education

Dear Members of the Carnegie Mellon Community:

I recently announced that, effective July 1, 2024, Dr. Amy Burkert will assume the position of senior vice provost for academic initiatives. As Dr. Burkert prepares to step into her new role, I am pleased to announce that an advisory committee has been formed to assist in the search for the next vice provost for education.

The vice provost for education (VPE) is a critical role at CMU that oversees university-wide education initiatives at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Their team is responsible for developing innovative, evidence-based approaches to enhance student learning; strengthening student scholarship and engagement; and tailoring programs and services to meet the diverse needs of the CMU community. The VPE role relies heavily on collaboration with CMU faculty, students and staff as well as higher education institutions, government agencies and nonprofit organizations across the globe.

Together with the search firm Heidrick & Struggles, Mary Ellen Poole, the Stanley and Marcia Gumberg Dean of the College of Fine Arts, and Becky Culyba, vice provost for operations and strategic initiatives, will co-chair a search committee comprised of members from across the university:

  • Alaine Allen, Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, College of Engineering
  • Gina Casalegno, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students
  • Joel Greenhouse, Professor, Statistics and Data Science and Faculty Senate Co-Chair, University Education Council
  • Veronica Hinman, Department Head and Dr. Frederick A. Schwertz Distinguished Professorship in the Life Sciences, Mellon College of Science
  • Dudley Reynolds, Senior Associate Dean, Education and Full Teaching Professor of English, CMU Qatar
  • Srinivasan Seshan, Joseph F. Traub Professor of Computer Science and Department Head, School of Computer Science
  • Jackie Speedy, Associate Dean of the School of Public Policy and Management, Heinz College
  • Willem-Jan van Hoeve, Carnegie Bosch Professor of Operations Research and Senior Associate Dean of Education, Tepper School of Business
  • Kris Wong Davis, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and Dean of Admission

The search committee is charged with identifying qualified individuals, encouraging nominations and applications and ensuring a diverse applicant pool. Over the coming months, they will gather feedback and input from stakeholders across the university aiming to fill the position for the next academic year. To learn more about this role and the search process, as well as to submit confidential inquiries, nominations or applications, visit the search website.

Dr. Burkert has laid an excellent foundation for this role during her time in the position and I am grateful that the next vice provost for education will have a strong base to build on as they continue to innovate and expand on CMU’s educational mission.

Sincerely,

James H. Garrett Jr.
Provost and Chief Academic Officer
