Michael C. Murphy
Vice President for Campus Affairs, Carnegie Mellon University
Michael C. Murphy serves as the vice president for Campus Affairs, a position he has held since 2008. In this capacity, he oversees the Divisions of Campus Services, Enrollment Services, Facilities Management Services and Student Affairs, as well as a number of other university departments. He also serves as an adjunct faculty member in the H. John Heinz III College of Public Policy & Information Systems.
Murphy has been a member of the Carnegie Mellon community since 1982. His most substantive tenure was 15 years as dean of Student Affairs (1990-2005), during which time the university became deeply invested in enhancing the student experience at the university. Murphy began his career with the university as the area coordinator for the Hill, and in 1985 he became assistant director of Housing & director of Residence Life. He was appointed student ombudsman and coordinator of special projects in 1988 and, in 1989, was appointed associate dean of Student Affairs. Upon leaving the deanship in 2005, he served as associate vice president for three years, until his current appointment.
Murphy received his bachelor's degree in economics in 1981 at the University of Virginia, where he also earned his master's in education and counseling the following year. He continued his education at Carnegie Mellon, where he earned his master's degree in public management in 1986. In 2004, he received his doctor of education degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He has served in a variety of advisory and consultative capacities throughout the country, currently serving on the MIT Corporation Visiting Committee for Student Life. He was elected in 2010 as a member of the National Vice Presidents' Group, a select group of vice presidents of student affairs and campus life from among the top universities and colleges in the country.
