CEIC's History

CEIC was established during August 2001 after an extended competition sponsored by Alfred P. Sloan Foundation among a number of research universities. Sloan Foundation and Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) identified 16 possible universities “based on their capabilities and their relations with leading organizations in the electricity industry.” Detailed site visits were made to four universities. In October of 2000, Sloan and EPRI concluded that Carnegie Mellon University “exhibited the best combination of strengths” and requested a final proposal from us.

Today, CEIC's work continues to be supported by generous contributions from Sloan, EPRI, industry sponsors, and other federal, state, and local granting agencies.
