Build a News Article

News Articles can be used for press releases, events, announcements or promoting important topics. News Articles work with the News Index. The page allows for a hero, additional content areas and other page elements.

Create the Page

  1. Select the folder in the asset tree where you want the news article.

  2. Select New > News > News Article (menu bar).
  3. Complete the required information:
    • System Name - type the file name to be displayed in the asset tree and the live web address. See Best Practices for more on selecting a system name.
    • Title - type a title for the news article to be displayed in the breadcrumb and where the story feeds in News Grid.
    • Description - type a summary of the page content.
    • Date - select the date and time for the news article.
    • Display Date on Article – select yes to show the date/time.
    • Hide from Navigation - select yes to hide the news article in the navigation.
  4. Add an optional Hero.
  5. Complete the News Article and Content elements.

Complete the News Article Details

Complete the news article details below. Fields that are required are starred in the CMS interface. 


Syndication feeds information from the News Article to the News Index and Hero. 

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Select yes for Make this story reusable to use the article as a hero news rotator, social media, etc.
      Note: An error message displays if the news article is missing syndication data and it's used with a hero or news grid.
    • Select no if it won't be referenced and continue to step 6.
  2. Type a short description of the news story for Summary. This displays below the title on news index and news grid.

  3. Select yes to add an image to be used where the article is referenced (optional). Complete the fields:
    • Image – browse to an image (900x600)
    • Social Media Image – browse  to an image if different from the one selected for Image.
    • Alt Text – enter alternate text for the selected image.
  4. Select yes for Make available to Rotators if the article will be used with a hero. Complete the fields:
    • Hi-res (1400x700) and mobile (900x600) images – browse  to select.
    • Heading - enter text to display over the hero.
    • Sub and Link text (optional) - enter text to display over the hero.
  5. Select yes to include the Syndication Image on the page, if one was added. It will display at the top of the article.
  6. Add a Subheading (optional).

Byline and Media Inquiries

Complete the Byline and Media Inquiry fields if appropriate for your news article. Media Inquiries offer contact information if there are questions. Click + to add another Byline or Media Inquiries contact.

Page Categories

Use categories to selectively display news articles on the News Index page (i.e., Alumni, Faculty, College, etc.). Hold CTRL (Windows) or Command (Mac) and click to select multiple categories.

Custom Categories

  1. Type a new category into the Custom Category list box. To add multiple categories, use a semicolon to separate the items.
  2. Click Submit.
    Note: It may take up to five minutes to display in the Page Categories for your site. Added categories will be applied to the current news article. Edit the article and deselect any categories you don't want associated with it. 

Main Content

Use the WYSIWYG area for the body of your news article. Enter a Section ID to link directly to this section or add a Sidebar. Both are optional.


Add Additional Content (optional)

Use the Content WYSIWYG area for basics such as text, links, tables or images. Select expand/collapse or sidebar to add, organize and display related information. You can also add a grid or slideshow.
