AI Literacy for Community Colleges
AI User is an introductory AI curriculum, focusing on having learners collaborate with AI-enabled systems so they can effectively utilize these systems in their careers. AI User is a curriculum that can be integrated into any course, as AI is changing the workforce across many disciplines. Each of the 8 units is taught within a relatable context, and instructors can select the modules that are relevant to their course. AI User teachs non-STEM students with a high-school education using interactive no-code projects based on real-world scenarios.
The NSF AI Institute for Societal Decision Making (AI-SDM) brings together AI and social sciences researchers to develop human-centric AI for societal good that harnesses the power of data and an improved understanding of human decisions to create better and more trusted choices.
The TEEL lab’s role in AI-SDM is to develop and deliver an AI Literacy curriculum targeted towards non-STEM learners with a high school education. This curriculum, called AI User, teaches about AI without the need for coding or math. Instead, students complete interactive projects in which they interact with AI based systems in real-world scenarios.
Our aim is to reach as many users of AI as possible to ensure that they enter the workforce with a solid understanding of AI’s capabilities and non-capabilities, and can think critically about the use of AI. To achieve this, we are building partnerships with Community Colleges and 2-year universities and providing our AI Literacy curriculum to those institutions.
The AI User curriculum consists of 8 units, organized around four areas of focus: foundational understanding, hardware for AI, applications of AI, and responsible AI. Each unit is centered on an interactive, no-code project set in a real world scenario, and also includes a pre project quiz and a post project quiz to assess learning. In addition, units feature interactive demo links along with instructional content to help learners build a stronger understanding of foundational AI concepts as they learn by doing.
Take a peek at some of the projects in this short demo video.
