New Blog: Unlocking Edge Computing in the new Living Edge Lab 5G Network
By Jim Blakley, Living Edge Lab Associate Director
Media InquiriesWe've always planned to move the Living Edge Lab private LTE network to 5G to improve its performance. We hoped for the advertised sub-20ms 5G network round-trip-times. But, when we first built our LTE network, 5G CBRS technology and products were just not ready. Finally, in 2024, we moved to 5G. As a resource for the CMU research community and, with our partners at GXC, the Linux Foundation Magma Community, Kirby Electric, the CMU Manufacturing Futures Institute (MFI), the CMU Entertainment Technologies Center (ETC), and CMU Facilities Management Services, we planned, built, and commissioned a new indoor and outdoor private 5G CBRS network at the historic Mill 19 complex in Pittsburgh. In our new 5G network, we are seeing a reliable 10-15ms round-trip-time -- a 3X improvement over our LTE network!
