"The world is really not such a big place..."

Meet Magnus Gan...

Magnus grew up in Singapore.  In the fall of 2007 and spring of 2008, Magnus ventured on a life-changing experience when he studied abroad for a full year at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland.

Before He Went

Magnus set out on his study abroad travels wanting to learn more French.  Other than wanting to learn more French, he was very open to anything he might face as he ventured to Switzerland!

Arrival to Lausanne

Magnus was impressed by the beauty and cleanliness of Switzerland. He really appreciated the European feel to the style of architecture.  He often talks about the beauty of the countryside of Switzerland.

Living in Lausanne

When thinking about what it was like to live in Switzerland, Magnus remembers having no problems finding his way around and getting along with people.  The people of Switzerland were incredibly polite and friendly and He felt very comfortable asking them for any kind of help.  He also notes that the people of Switzerland were very prompt and proper.  Magnus observations of people were instrumental in developing a new life vision, one that emphasizes that people are people, no matter where you go.

Living in Lausanne gave Magnus the opportunity to further develop skill in understanding and speaking the French language.  He took challenging classes in French, which helped him learn the language in many contexts.

Looking Back on His Experience...

When Magnus returned to the U.S., he found it difficult to transition back to the lifestyle in Pittsburgh.  Looking back, Magnus realizes what an impact studying abroad had on his life. He sees himself as being more comfortable going to unfamiliar places in the world and feels as though he understands more about the world from this experience.  He has a new outlook in life, one that encourages him to be calm, reasonable, and mellow.
