Dr. J. Paul Fugassi and Linda Monteverde Award

Purpose

The Paul J. Fugassi and Linda Monteverde Award has been established to recognize superior scholarship and exceptional promise of a senior woman in MCS.

Eligibility

All senior women in MCS are eligible. The MCS Monteverde Award is given to a senior woman each year solely on the basis of superior scholarship and exceptional promise in biology, chemistry, math, or physics.

Administration

The Dean of MCS will designate an MCS Associate Dean to be responsible for the administration of the nomination and selection process, including the calling for proposals and the convening of the Selection Committee.

Selection Committee

The recipient will be chosen by a committee appointed by the Dean of MCS that includes the MCS Associate Dean Responsible for the committee and the advisor from each department.

Nomination Deadline

All nominations are due on or before April 1 and should be delivered to the MCS Associate Dean's office in Doherty Hall. Electronic copies are preferred.

Nomination Requirements

Each MCS department may nominate one female student. This student may also be the nominee for the Resnik award, if appropriate, and the results of that competition will not impact the college's decision.

Selection

The selection committee will meet in April and will be comprised of the advisor from each department and the Associate Dean. The nomination packet should be prepared by the departmental advisor and include whiteprint, personal statement from the candidate, resume, and letter of nomination. A list of each candidate's strengths in the areas of academics, honors, leadership abilities, and plans after graduation will be compiled for the group to review during the meeting. At the meeting, each departmental advisor will give a brief statement in support of their department's candidate. After any questions or additional issues have been addressed, each member of the group will vote by ballot, ranking their choice of candidates from one to four, with one being the most preferred. Each candidate's scores will be added and the one with the lowest overall score will be named as winner.

Presentation of Award

The MCS Monteverde Award, consisting of a certificate and a $1000 scholarship, is presented to the winner at the MCS annual meeting at the end of the spring semester. At the discretion of the Dean of MCS, this award may not be presented every year.
