Dear Friend,

Some ask, “how do you accomplish all that you do?” The answer is simple – volunteers! It is with you and because of you that we are able to successfully engage more alumni, students, parents and friends with the university than we have before.

We are pleased to highlight in this issue the results of our successful launch of the Loyal Scot program, and the hard work and determination of our fundraising volunteers who helped with our year-end push this past June. With your ongoing efforts, we look forward to growing the number of alumni who are truly, hopelessly, undeniably, plaid to the bone!

Sincerely,

David Bohan

Loyal Scots: Plaid to the Bone

You may recall the Alumni Association launched a new program exclusively for alumni and students during this past Spring Carnival – Loyal Scot. Alumni and students were excited to have their involvement and support of the university recognized. Some became Loyal Scots that weekend either by attending an event or by making a contribution to the university. We are happy to report that, between mid-April and the end of our fiscal year in June, nearly 2,600 alumni and students became Loyal Scots!

The Alumni Association Board has embraced the Loyal Scot program, and has made increasing the number of Loyal Scots each year its main objective. We have talked with many of you as the program has developed, and are encouraged by the interest and excitement you have shown. We have also reached out to our key student volunteers, the Highland Ambassadors, to get student reaction and input. They were enthusiastic to say the least, and more than half became Loyal Scots.

Loyal Scot recognizes both alumni and students who wear their plaid on their sleeves, are more deeply involved in the Carnegie Mellon community, and specifically do the following four things each year:
  • Keep their contact information up-to-date with Carnegie Mellon.
  • Attend an event or volunteer for Carnegie Mellon.
  • Make a gift of ANY size each year.
  • Show their Tartan pride - anytime, anywhere – and advocate for Carnegie Mellon.
There are many ways for you to participate, help the program grow, and make it fun along the way.
  • Check out the Loyal Scot website to learn more.
  • Tell us what makes you plaid to the bone.
  • Create some competition within and among your alumni groups (i.e. chapter challenges, etc.).
  • Download some Tartan pride – iPhone app, ringtones, wallpaper and more – to help you spread the word to alumni and students in your area and in your volunteer groups.
  • Send us your ideas for ways to create more Loyal Scots.
We have an ambitious goal this year – 7,500 Loyal Scots – triple our current number! And, we will need help from each of you in order to reach it. So, please send us your thoughts and feedback. We look forward to your involvement with this exciting initiative for all Carnegie Mellon alumni and students.

To the Goal ... and Beyond!

Sonya Miller, E’87, is a successful engineer, who has worked nationally and internationally managing large-scale, industrial engineering projects. Becoming an ACS member in 2005, and funding a scholarship and joining the ACS Board in 2008, she credits her success and motivation in giving back to Dr. Richard Cyert and the financial assistance she received, which made it possible for her to complete her degree.

As a member of the ACS Board, Sonya understands the importance of annual and long-term commitments that enable Carnegie Mellon to provide financial support for students. She is excited to share her personal Carnegie Mellon experiences with alumni and potential donors, and does so by meeting with alumni in her home-state of Tennessee.

Last June, Sonya was one of approximately 50 fundraising volunteers who assisted the annual fund staff in soliciting more than 800 of their peers for end-of-fiscal year gifts. “I am happy to reach out to people in Memphis. Alumni are more compelled to give when they are contacted by other alumni who share their excitement for Carnegie Mellon.”

Having a robust pool of volunteers like Sonya, who serve as advocates by sharing their stories, connecting alumni, and soliciting potential donors, is critical to reaching our financial and participation goals. Last year, we exceeded our annual fund goal and raised $7.1M. In addition, these same volunteers are helping us to reach one of our campaign goals of 25% annual alumni participation each year.

If you are interested in sharing your personal Carnegie Mellon story or possibly soliciting other alumni, please email Kristin Sullivan or call 412.268.5139.
