Alumni Awards

First presented in 1950, the Alumni Awards recognize alumni, faculty and students for their service to the university and for their achievements in the arts, humanities, sciences, technology and business. To date more than 750 individuals have been honored through the program.

Help the Alumni Association to honor alumni, students and faculty
who have given outstanding service to the university. Click on the
form to the right to find the award categories and descriptions
(at the end of the document). Also, below is the listing
of all previous Alumni Award Honorees.

Nominations are as easy as 1, 1, 2...

1 nomination form
1 vitae/resume, including all service roles with the university
2 letters of support (minimum; you may include more)

Nominate as many candidates as you like. Complete nomination packets
must be received at the Alumni Office by September 1, 2009.

The Alumni Association is proud to announce the 2009 Alumni Award Honorees, who will be celebrated at the Alumni Awards Ceremony on Friday, October 30, 5:30 p.m. on the Pittsburgh Campus. All alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends are invited.


Alumni Distinguished Achievement

William Red L. Whittaker, E'75, '79, world-renowned robotics pioneer and founder of Field Robotics, for his vision and leadership in developing unmanned robots to work in dangerous sites, rugged terrains, on-road and off-road, and, in the near future, on the moon.

Alumni Distinguished Service

Wayne S. Balta, E'82, for his exceptional service to Carnegie Mellon and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Deborah C. Kelly, HNZ'94, For her leadership and enthusiastic service to the Andrew Carnegie Society and Carnegie Mellon.

William Thomas Wood, II, E'74, for his dedication to Carnegie Mellon students, alumni and the Buggy/Sweepstakes tradition.

Alumni Achievement

Carol A. Dudley-Williams, E'80, engineer and change agent, as a corporate leader and outstanding role model for women in engineering.

Ralph J. Guggenheim, HS'74, S'79, a pioneer in computer graphics and film animation, for his major impact and innovative contributions to the film industry.

Edwin Mieczkowski, A'59, abstract artist, for his leadership in the Op Art movement and current geometric abstraction representations of new science concepts.

Shree K. Nayar, E'91, pioneering researcher and professor, for his outstanding research and teaching in the field of computer vision and robotics.

Benjamin A. Pontano, E'65, technology innovator, as an entrepreneurial leader and pioneer in developing satellite communications for the world.

Jeffrey L. Zaslow, HS'80, columnist and book author, for telling the world important and inspiring stories, including Carnegie Mellon's Randy Pausch.

Recent Alumni

Markus Klausner, E'98, engineer and corporate leader repsonsible for developing a new generation of antilock braking and vehicle dynamics control systems.

Ram K. Krishnamurthy, E'98, expert in high-performance digital circuit design, for his vital contributions to new technologies in the semiconductor industry.

Chris T. Hendrickson, for his remarkable commitment to the support, education and mentorship of Civil and Environmental Engineering alumni.

Saad Rashid Al-Matwi, TPR'10, for his leadership and investment of time and talents to benefit the Qatar campus community.
