Working with Us

The Foundation Relations team is here to help you with donor research, proposal development, connecting to staff at foundations, and once grants have been awarded, stewardship and reporting.

This graphic [pdf] illustrates the process for how the Office of Foundation Relations generally works with faculty to develop proposals to foundations.

Indirect Costs

Before submitting proposals, faculty need to determine whether foundations provide any support for indirect costs and which budget items can be considered when calculating indirect costs. We encourage faculty to always request the full amount of overhead/indirect costs allowed by a foundation.

The indirect costs allowed by a foundation may not cover the full amount of CMU’s internal administrative fee. If that is the case, any remaining unrecovered costs must be borne by the department submitting the application.

Faculty are advised to work closely with their department heads and department business managers, Foundation Relations staff, and the Office of Sponsored Programs to anticipate and address the extent of unrecovered overhead associated with their proposed projects.
