Carnegie Mellon University

University Education Council

The University Education Council (UEC) serves as a key advisory body at Carnegie Mellon University, focusing on matters related to all aspects of student education, as well as the role and responsibilities of faculty in delivering and supporting those educational activities. In its capacity, the UEC formulates and provides recommendations to both the Faculty Senate and the provost, ensuring that academic policies and practices align with the university’s educational mission and goals.

The UEC plays a vital role in shaping university-wide academic policy and practice, often addressing issues raised by the Faculty Senate, Undergraduate Student Senate and the Graduate Student Assembly. Its work has influenced initiatives such as improvements to course evaluations and feedback tools, increased access to course syllabi and open educational resources, and the development and review of university-wide academic policies and courses.

Membership

Members of the UEC are initially appointed for a one-year term, with the option for renewal to support continuity in the council’s work. The council meets at least once a month from September through May, and a quorum is established with two-thirds of the members present. Meetings are attended and voted on by council members only, though guests may be invited when appropriate. All members are encouraged to actively contribute by submitting agenda items.
