Using ChatGPT Edu with an Existing OpenAI Account

Many CMU community members already use ChatGPT with their @andrew.cmu.edu email. Here’s what to expect if you get a ChatGPT Edu license.

If you choose to purchase an Edu license, use this page to understand how your existing account may change.

If You Purchase a Chat GPT Edu Account

You will receive an email invite within one business day after ordering through the Software Catalog.

What Changes:

  • Your Free or Plus account will become an Edu account.
  • You will log in using CMU's Web Login and DUO.
  • On your first login, you can:
    • Migrate your existing ChatGPT data, or
    • Export and delete your existing data.

Important: We strongly recommend exporting and deleting your ChatGPT data. Once you switch to Edu, you cannot move or export your data later. This includes chats and custom GPTs.

If you Choose Not to Purchase a ChatGPT Edu License

Your existing account will not change if:

  • You use an alias email like @cmu.edu or @cs.cmu.edu.
  • You are an OpenAI Platform API customer.

Using ChatGPT Edu with a Teams Account

  • You can use both ChatGPT Edu and ChatGPT Teams.

  • You’ll get an email invite within one business day of purchase.

  • Log in to ChatGPT Edu with CMU Web Login and DUO.

  • Use your ChatGPT password to access the Teams account.

You can switch between accounts:

  • Edu → Teams

    • Enter your Teams email + password.

    • Click Continue with Password.

  • Teams → Edu

    • After you enter your Andrew email, click CMU Edu SSO.

Reminder: ChatGPT Edu data can't be transferred. Save any important chats manually.

If You Leave Your Teams Account:

  • You’ll lose all chats and custom GPTs from your Teams workspace.
