Power Restored at Mellon Institute; Restoration Under Way

Full power has been restored to Mellon Institute and an extensive clean-up operation is under way in the facility after flooding due to a city water main break Saturday morning caused major damage to the basement and first and second floors of the building.

Madelyn Miller, director of Environmental Health and Safety, said offices, labs, microscopes and other scientific equipment were damaged, however no one was harmed and there were no releases of any hazardous materials.

Miller also said all personnel are to report for work and that efforts are being made to provide temporary office space for faculty and researchers who were affected.

The water main break at the intersection of Henry and Dithridge streets occurred at approximately 10:42 Saturday morning.

Facilities Management Services and University Police ask for patience while they concentrate their efforts on Mellon Institute.
