Robotics Institute Founders Honored Oct. 13

Founders' Panel Recognizes Contributions of Angel Jordan, Tom Murrin and Raj Reddy

The university community is invited to attend the Robotics Institute's 25th Anniversary (http;//www.ri25.org) Founders' Panel and reception from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13 at the Carnegie Music Hall. Robotics Institute founders Angel Jordan, University Professor Emeritus, Tom Murrin, Distinguished Service Professor of Business at Duquesne University, and Raj Reddy, University Professor of Computer Science and Robotics, will discuss their insights on the grand challenges of robotics.

In opening remarks, Carnegie Mellon President Jared L. Cohon, will honor the founders for their role in the history of the university and the Robotics Institute. Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato, State Representative Daniel Frankel and Congressmen Michael Doyle will also recognize the founders in closing remarks.

"The Robotics Institute was founded 25 years ago on the vision of these three gifted men and a $3 million gift from Westinghouse," said President Cohon. "Today the institute is a $50 million enterprise with some 300 faculty, students and staff working on more than 100 projects.

"Robotics Institute research breakthroughs are changing the fields of agriculture, medicine, mining, transportation, space exploration and national security, to name just a few. Our work has furthered the goals of government agencies, including NASA, DARPA, the Department of Energy, the Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency. Companies from around the world work with us, learning how to use robotics to solve problems, develop new products and open new fields of commercial endeavor," he said.

President Cohon also has noted that companies, government agencies and universities come to recruit the outstanding potential employees produced in the Robotics Institute's unique master's and doctor's programs.
