Engineering Impact in Africa
In 2011, CMU-Africa was established through a partnership between Carnegie Mellon University and the Government of Rwanda to address a shortfall in engineering talent needed to accelerate development in Africa. In the 14 years since, the campus has grown and evolved thanks to the commitment of CMU and its partners, like the Mastercard Foundation, to invest in higher education and innovation for Africa’s young people.
Explore three things you may not have known about CMU-Africa and its impact.
The African population is young.
Africa has the youngest and fastest-growing population in the world. The Mastercard Foundation estimates that by 2030 there will be 375 million young people in the job market in Africa, and that number is expected to grow to more than a billion people within the next few decades. Young people in Africa represent the workforce of tomorrow and will lead Africa through a digital transformation — if they have the skills and knowledge to participate in and build the economies of the future.

CMU-Africa graduates are going places — and leading when they get there.
CMU-Africa’s impact includes a close to 90% employment rate within the first year of graduation. Its alumni have founded or joined startup companies, are pursuing their Ph.D.s in top doctoral programs in the United States and Europe, and are serving in government information offices, including in the government of Rwanda and the World Bank.

CMU-Africa moved to a new home.
In 2019, CMU-Africa moved to a new location within Kigali Innovation City in Rwanda, whose goal is to foster digital innovation and entrepreneurial activity that will catalyze Rwanda’s economic growth. The building is strategically located in close proximity to large international corporations and innovative technology startups, such as Volkswagen and Mara Phone, which affords students the opportunity to interact directly with the industries around them, to experiment, to innovate, and to build truly transformational and scalable solutions that will impact not only Rwanda, but the entire continent.
