Empowering Research Through Coordinated Computing and Data Services
The Office of Research Computing and Data (RCD) is dedicated to advancing research capabilities across the institution. Our mission is to provide coordinated support for research computing and data, enabling faculty, staff, and students to focus on innovation and discovery.
We aim to foster a collaborative research environment by providing shared and centralized services that are accessible to the research community. RCD helps researchers tackle complex challenges and accelerate their work by streamlining access to powerful computing and data resources, as well as expert support. We guide decisions on where to host these resources and support vendor interactions.
What We Offer
Our office provides a comprehensive range of shared services designed to support the diverse needs of the research community. This includes assistance with the management and deployment of large-scale compute clusters.
Tartan CUI Cloud (TC2)
The Tartan CUI Cloud (TC2) is a CMMC level 2 environment designed for collaboration, research, and business operations involving Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). It facilitates the secure exchange of CUI documents within the Government Computing Cloud's high-security boundary, preventing unauthorized sharing with external entities or users.
TC2 operates within the Microsoft Azure Government Community Cloud (GCC), offering users a virtual desktop equipped with essential software, tools, and Azure's compute and storage capabilities. This environment encompasses Exchange Online, Office 365, SharePoint Online, and managed Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) hosts running Windows, ensuring secure access to a collaborative workspace. Participants in TC2 can connect to their managed Azure Virtual Desktops from non-managed systems via an encrypted RDP tunnel.
The TC2 enclave is available to all CMU researchers. Access is managed through a structured onboarding process. Details can be found on the Information Security Office website.
Google Cloud Cluster
The Google Cloud Cluster, branded ORCHARD, is an innovative, cloud-based computing resource created in collaboration with Google specifically for research projects. It offers high-performance computing tools, direct access to Google engineers, and robust AI and advanced computing capabilities to help us tackle today's challenges. This resource significantly boosts our cloud-based GPU capabilities. For details on the cluster hardware and configuration, see the FAQ.
