Intelligent Monitoring and Control of Building Integrated Photovoltaics
Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) systems present significant challenges with respect to optimal energy efficiency of Photovoltaic (PV) arrays. In these systems, the PV panels replace roof tops, and other building components such as windows. Due to their diverse locations and orientations, influence of numerous environmental factors can significantly reduce the performance and overall efficiency rendering the BIPV system economically infeasible. We are developing stochastic learning algorithms for monitoring array performance, detection and estimation of module failure and degradation events, and attribution of such events to unknown spatiotemporal patterns (including component mismatch, dirt deposition on panels and shading). Furthermore, we are investigating intelligent control techniques for Adaptive Maximum Power Point Tracking (AMPPT) to optimize array performance in the event of system degradation.
