Some Lab Outreach Activities:

Justin, Shub, and Keith help out with Nanodays event at a local elementary school

Entire lab builds model rockets with 40 4th graders in the “Moving 4th” Rocket Launch

Spencer Wyant wins best NSF REU research project at Carnegie Mellon (our 2nd straight 1st prize!)

Scott and Jon speak about how research impacts our lives at the “What is Research” series sponsored by the Siemens Foundation

REU Student Spencer Wyant joins us to study thermoelectricity in organic-inorganic hybrid materials with Wee-Liat

Jon judges the Science Fair at Community Day Middle School in Pittsburgh.  Some great ideas- in particular one student used a grid of blueberrys, and their “popping rate” to identify the radiation distribution in a microwave.  Wow.

Jon spoke to local 8-12 grade students about his pathway to research at the regional Siemens Competition for Math, Science, and Technology held at Carnegie Mellon University

Jon & Zoey discussed nanotechnology with Pittsburgh area High School and Middle School  students at the Sci-Tech Festival at the Carnegie Science Center

NSF REU Student David Ring joins us from UMBC to work with Professor Islam and Scott on Thermoelectricity in nanostructured materials.  Congratulations to David for winning best REU research project at Carnegie Mellon.

Jon speaks at South Allegheny Middle School about careers in science and engineering, specifically related to energy.

Scott volunteers weekly with Carnegie Mellon's East End Tutoring.

With professor Alan McGaughey and Dr. John Thomas, Jon participates in the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) High school day at Carnegie Mellon.
