Custodial Services

Custodial Services promotes community health and infection prevention and control by maintaining a consistent, thorough and deliberate cleaning process. Keep reading to learn more about our cleaning schedules, cleaning term definitions and details of services by area. 

For Requests, Concerns or Space-Usage Modifications

You can speak to our Clean-It Customer Service Rep directly by calling 412-268-2036 between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. If you have a specific request or will be using a space outside of normal occupancy, please contact Custodial Services at cleanit@andrew.cmu.edu so that we can adjust services accordingly. 

Cleaning Term Definitions

  • Cleaning: The removal of dirt and debris from surfaces.
  • Custodial Services: A custodian whose responsibility it is to conduct the full range of cleaning, deep cleaning (when necessary), removing trash and recycling, and restocking paper supplies and soap in kitchenettes and restrooms. Vacuuming and mopping is typically performed at a set interval based on space type.
  • Porter Services: A custodian who works during the day and is responsible for ensuring the facility is clean and presentable to the campus community by performing cleaning tasks, such as removing trash and recycling, and restocking paper supplies and soap in kitchenettes and restrooms.

Weekday Services (Monday thru Friday):

  • Instructional Spaces and Classrooms

    • Nightly custodial service

  • Restrooms, Public Spaces, Common Areas
    • Portered daily
    • Nightly custodial service
      • Exceptions – Baker-Porter offices, PTC, SEI, INI, and UTDC receive custodial services during daylight hours.
  • Departmental Spaces Including Lounges, Conference Rooms and Kitchenettes
    • Portered daily
    • Nightly custodial service
      • Exceptions – PTC, SEI and III receive custodial services during daylight hours.
  • Offices
    • Weekly custodial service to include mopping/vacuuming of flooring and emptying trash.
    • Refer to the building list below for the specific office cleaning schedule per building.
  • Labs
    • Cleaned based on occupancy and usage in coordination with department as requested.

Weekend Services:

  • Instructional Spaces and Classrooms
    • Portered daily
  • Restrooms, Public Spaces, Common Areas
    • Portered daily

Athletic:

  • Portered daily (7 days per week)
  • Nightly Custodial Service

Childcare:

  • Portered daily (5 days per week, based on operating hours)
  • Nightly Custodial Service (Sunday night through Thursday night)

Dining:

  • Portered daily (7 days per week)
  • Nightly Custodial Service

Health Services:

  • Portered daily (5 days per week, based on operating hours)
  • Nightly Custodial Service (Sunday night through Thursday night)

Custodial Services implements a quality management system defined by the Cleaning Industry Experts – ISSA. It’s a comprehensive framework with emphasis on six principles. CMU Custodial Services received the Cleaning Institute Management Standard (CIMS) certification with Honors and Green Building certification in 2018, 2020 and 2022.
