Setup

These instructions begin after Microsoft Office 2011 has been installed.  Before you proceed, Run Microsoft Update from a Microsoft application (Help > Check for Updates) until you receive a "no updates available" message.

Complete the following to setup Outlook 2011 (Mac):

  1. Launch Outlook 2011.
    Note: If you are using Office for the first time, the Create an Identity window will display.  Enter your contact information and follow the window prompts.  When prompted to check for updates select Yes.  You may need to launch Outlook 2011 again.
  2. Click Add an Account on the Welcome screen.
    Note: If you do not see the Welcome Screen, click Tools > Accounts and then the + arrow icon icon.
  3. Click E-mail Account.
  4. Enter your Carnegie Mellon address (e.g., juser@andrew.cmu.edu).  Tab to the Password field.  The Account Information window will expand.
  5. Enter the following:
    • User name: Enter your Andrew userID+
      Note: Adding the "+" sign after your Andrew userID circumvents downloading a full list of bboards.
    • Type: IMAP
    • Incoming server: cyrus.andrew.cmu.edu
    • Override default port: checked
    • Use SSL to connect: checked
    • Port: 993
    • Outgoing server: smtp.andrew.cmu.edu
    • Override default port: checked
    • Use SSL to connect: checked
    • Port: 587

  6. Click Add Account.  If prompted, enter your Andrew account password.
  7. Enter an Account Description (e.g. CMU IMAP Mail) and your name as you would like it to appear on outgoing email messages.
  8. Click More Options.

  9. Select User Name and Password and enter your AndrewID and password.
    Note: Do NOT add the + after your Andrew userID.

  10. Click OK.

Set Your Sent Mail and Drafts Folders

  1. From the Accounts window, select Advanced.
  2. Click Folders
  3. From the Sent drop-down, select  Sent Mail (Server).

  4. From the Drafts drop-down, select Drafts (Server).
  5. You may also set your Junk and Trash folder options here.
  6. Click OK.

Add a Directory Service

A directory service provides address book functionality to retrieve Carnegie Mellon names and email addresses quickly from the server.

  1. From the Accounts window, click the + arrow icon icon and select Directory Service.

  2. Enter ldap.cmu.edu for LDAP server.
  3. Uncheck - use SSL to connect.
  4. Click Add Account.
  5. Enter an Account Description (e.g., CMU Person Search)

  6. Click Advanced.
  7. For Search base enter: dc=cmu,dc=edu
  8. Click OK.
  9. Close the Accounts window to save your changes.
Outlook 2011 is now setup with IMAP.  You should see your "CMU IMAP Mail" mailbox in the folder list.
