Get to Know Mohammed

"I consider myself a very blessed person: I was born in a small, rural village in northern Egypt, where access to education was a challenge (the nearest school was two hours away, through a muddy road). Despite these early challenges, I became the first in my immediate and extended family to go to college.

"I have more than ten years of experience working within the public sector, the financial sector, and consulting domains. One of my proudest professional moments was working for the Egyptian treasury, leading a team to fight tax evasion and eventually doubling tax revenues in four years, by more than $25 billion.

"I am very passionate about technology, especially emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. Before my MBA, I worked as a machine learning and data analytics consultant at Pythian, a leading consultancy for emerging tech and Google 2018 Partner of the Year. Pythian was one of only 12 worldwide that is certified to implement Google Cloud machine learning solutions. My career took me to Canada, the Czech Republic, France, and the U.S. I love to travel and have been to more than 55 countries.

"I am also passionate about providing access to technology within low-resource communities. That’s why, in 2016, I started an initiative, 'Green Teachers,' with my two sisters, to introduce technology to classrooms in rural Egypt. We give teachers tablet computers loaded with education software to use in their curriculum and to help manage their classrooms. It was that initiative that gravitated my interest in pursuing an MBA.

"I decided to pursue an MBA mainly to acquire critical skills that will transition me within my career. Although I had a strong technological and analytic background that benefited me at my work as a consultant, I specifically wanted to acquire skills in the areas of finance, communication, decision-making, and fundamentals of design.

"With CMU's world-renowned discipline in artificial intelligence, Tepper's Product Management MBA track (formerly Technology Leadership) would position me to pursue a career in high tech where I help businesses with the development, application, and management of cutting-edge technologies, especially in machine learning and analytics. Tepper's curriculum and small, tight-knit classes would allow me to learn a great deal, with the ability to access career services knowing that they will have enough time for me. I was enchanted that all the companies I dreamt of working for hire on-campus, like tech-focused ones (Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and lots of start-ups) and a great deal of consulting firms (my other career interest) like the Big Four and MBB who speak incredibly well about the school's reputation.

"So far, I love the size and the pace of Pittsburgh. I wanted a break from big and crazy New York City, and Pittsburgh's location, size, and pace show a great balance. It is not too far from big cities, has a good flight and train connections, cheaper accommodations, and, the best thing, free buses for students.

"Cultures and languages interest me. I have lived and worked in five countries and speak a few languages. I also enjoy photography and running long-distance races for charity. I fluently speak Arabic, English, French, and a bit of Spanish, and have an affinity for art, music, and world history."
