Commencement 2017 Weekend Preview

Carnegie Mellon University’s 2017 Commencement Weekend takes place Saturday and Sunday, May 20–21. In addition to the university’s main ceremony on Sunday, the Tepper School will host several events to recognize students from each of its programs.

The undergraduate economics program will participate in the Dietrich College’s honors ceremony in Rangos Ballroom of the Cohon University Center on Saturday, May 20 at 9–11 a.m. The undergraduate business administration program will hold its honors ceremony at the same time in the main lobby of Posner Hall.

At 12:30 p.m., the graduate diploma ceremony will take place at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland. The keynote speaker for the graduate diploma ceremony is Gillian Tett, the U.S. managing editor and columnist for the Financial Times. There will be a live video of her speech on the Tepper School’s Facebook, which will be accessible during and after the ceremony.

This year’s graduate diploma ceremony welcomes a special guest to “walk” with the graduating students: The TepperBot3000 is a robot that members of the Tepper School’s part-time online hybrid MBA format control remotely from an app on their smartphones in order to participate in on-campus activities like club meetings and career development events throughout the year. Benjamin Harris, of Erie, and Matthew McElhaney, of Oklahoma City, are unable to attend the ceremony in person on Saturday but will still be able to “walk” thanks to the TepperBot3000.

Following the graduate diploma ceremony, robing for the Tepper School’s Ph.D. graduates will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the foyer of the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland, in preparation for Carnegie Mellon's Doctor's Hooding Ceremony. This portion of the event is for graduates and faculty only. The hooding ceremony, which is open to guests, will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Carnegie Music Hall.

SUNDAY MAY 21, 2017

Carnegie Mellon’s Commencement is on Sunday, May 21 at 11 a.m. in Gesling Stadium on the CMU campus. Guests of students must be seated by 10:15 a.m. for the procession.

At 2:30 p.m., following the main CMU ceremony, the Tepper undergraduate diploma ceremony for both economics and business administration students will take place at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland.

Throughout the weekend, you can like the Tepper School of Business on Facebook and follow us on Twitter and Instagram @TepperCMU for photos and updates from the weekend’s events.
