Alumnus James Swartz to Speak at Tepper School Graduate Diploma Ceremony

Tepper School of Business alumnus James Swartz, MSIA ’66, will deliver the keynote address to Ph.D., MBA and Masters of Science in Computational Finance graduates at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School diploma ceremony on Friday, May 13. The event will begin with a processional at 7:30 p.m. inside Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood.

A dedicated alumnus to the Tepper School and Carnegie Mellon, Swartz serves on multiple campus boards and sponsors several entrepreneurial activities, including the James R. Swartz Entrepreneurial Fellows and the James R. Swartz Entrepreneurial Leadership Series. Most recently, Swartz made a $31 million gift to the university to establish the new Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship. This generous gift will support both infrastructure and programming for entrepreneurship in the new Tepper Quadrangle, set to open in fall 2018.

Swartz also was a founding member and chair of President Suresh’s Global Advisory Council and a longtime member of the Tepper School’s Business Board of Advisors. 

In addition to his dedication to Carnegie Mellon and the Tepper School, Swartz is one of the most successful venture capitalists in the world. He is a founding partner of Accel Partners, based in Palo Alto, California, with offices in London and Bangalore. Accel is a leading early- and growth-stage venture capital firm that has decades of experience building and supporting hundreds of innovative companies, including Facebook, Dropbox and Veritas. Swartz also is a former chairman of the National Venture Capital Association and the 2007 recipient of its Lifetime Achievement Award.

Graduation events will take place from Friday, May 13 through Sunday, May 15. Carnegie Mellon’s 119th Commencement will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 15 in Gesling Stadium. Earl Lewis, president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will deliver keynote remarks. Swartz will be receiving an honorary doctor of business practice degree at the Commencement Ceremony.
