Advocating for graduate students is central to the GSA’s mission. One way that we make graduate students issues visible to the community is by serving on committees. While GSA department representatives must sit on at least one internal or external committees, membership is not limited to GSA reps.
Any graduate student interested in serving on a committee is welcome to join. If you’d like to join an internal GSA committee, contact the VP chairing the committee. The best way to get involved on an external committee is to contact the GSA VP of Internal Affairs.
GSA has five internal committees headed by a GSA VP. Each committee focuses on different aspects of graduate student life, graduate student advocacy, and GSA operations.
The Campus Affairs committee advocates for graduate student interests on the CMU campus. If you’re interested in joining the Campus Affairs Committee, contact the GSA VP of Campus Affairs.
The GSA Finance committee reviews requests for special allocations of GSA funds and makes recommendations to the general GSA body. If you’re interested in joining the Finance Committee, contact the GSA VP of Finance
The GSA External Affairs committee represents GSA to the world outside Carnegie Mellon by promoting the interests of Carnegie Mellon graduate students at the city, state, region, and national levels. If you’re interested in joining the External Affairs Committee, contact the GSA VP of External Affairs
The Social Committee enacts GSA’s goal to promote a sense of community for graduate students. The Social Committee discusses and makes decisions regarding event and activity planning. If you are interested joining the Social Committee, contact the GSA VP of Graduate Student Life

Graduate students also serve on a variety of other non-GSA committees at CMU. These committees deal with student government, campus environment, student services, and student health and safety. A full table of these committees is available here. If you’re interested in joining an external committee contact the GSA VP of Internal Affairs.
