Class: Graduated in 2018 with a
BFA in Clarinet Performance and Astrophysics

I have been a part of the Pre-College program for 6 years now, and this is my third year in this role. I recieved my BFA in Music Performance for Clarinet with an additional degree in Physics Astrophysics. The last three semesters I've been working with Professor Matthew Walker to use Gaia Satellite Kinematic Solutions to determine solar motion in the Milky Way. We are looking to publish a paper on our findings in the Fall. I also compose music in my free time and am very grateful to have had many ensembles on campus perform my works over the past 4 years. I will be the Community Advisor for Mudge House this summer and am looking forward to being a part of this program again.

Class: Graduated in 2018 with a
BS in Neuroscience

Hi, I'm Missy! I am a newly graduated alumna of Carnegie Mellon and I am super excited to be the CA for Stever House this summer. At CMU, I was a member of the Women's Soccer team, was an active member of the Plaidvocates, performed neurotrauma research at UPMC, and spent far too much time in CFA for all things music related. It is my goal this summer to go to all the museums and places available through the CMU student ID cards, as well as finding cool new running trails in the parks around the city.

Alexander Kampus -
Residential Advisor

AlexanderKampus
Class: Sophomore
Major: French Horn Performance

Despite being from just outside Pittsburgh my entire life, I didn't frequently visit the city. Attending Pre-College here at CMU the summer after my freshman year opened my eyes to what a neat city Pittsburgh is! Since coming here, I've been very involved with the on-campus music scene, including the CMU Philharmonic, Wind Ensemble, Opera, and several chamber groups. Being at CMU has afforded me several off-campus opportunities, such as working with Ben Folds, scattered gigs, and working at WQED, the local radio station. As if horn wasn't strange enough as is, I also play the accordion, recorder, and cuatro puertorriqueño for fun. I've been able to tailor my experience here at CMU to exactly what I needed.

Amber Griffith -

Hi my name is Austin Hsu and I am from Potomac Maryland. I grew up playing lots of sports like soccer, tennis, baseball and volleyball. I am currently on the club soccer team and a member of the Greek Organization of Phi Delta Theta. During my past couple of summers, I worked as a counselor where I counseled kids with special needs. Back in High School I was very involved with athletics. During my Senior year I was captain of my school's varsity soccer team, varsity tennis team and varsity volleyball team. During my free time, I used to volunteer at nursing homes. During the weekends in Pittsburgh I like to go out and explore the area with friends. Sometimes I would go to see a movie or go and eat some nice food at restaurants that upperclassmen recommend me to go to.

Besides being involved in design, I’m a competitive figure skater and compete for the CMU figure skating club. I’m so excited to be back for my second year as a Pre-College RA! In addition to my major, I am considering adding a minor of Psychology or Writing as I head into my Junior year. I’m a member of Scotch’n’ Soda, a student run theatre company. I was thrilled to be cast as Inga in our Fall 2017 production of Young Frankenstein! One of the leadership roles I am most proud of and is closest to my heart is being the Operations Coordinator for our chapter of Camp Kesem. I am also a Camp Counselor for our week long camp which is provided free of charge for our Kesem kiddos. My heart is so full knowing we help the families and, especially the children , whose lives have been affected by a parent’s cancer. CMU is such an incredible community and I’m thrilled to be back for the summer!

Major: Mathematical Sciences

Hi! My name is Carol and I am a rising sophomore in CMU's class of 2021. I am currently majoring in mathematical sciences, but I have interests in other fields such as engineering, data science, finance, art, and game design. I come from San Jose/the Bay Area, California and I am also a Pre-College alum that was in the Game Academy program. Outside of going to classes and studying, my favorite thing to do at CMU is to dance and practice for competitions as a member of the CMU Ballroom Dance Club. We travel to different states to compete and the community is super tight. It's also fun to explore the food and art scene around Pittsburgh. I'd recommend Burgatory for food and the Mattress Factory for art, but there are tons of great places to check out. I'm excited to continue my experiences here for the coming years!

Cora Hickoff -
Residential Advisor

CoraHickoff
Class: Junior
Major: Art

Hey there! I’m Cora, an art major focused on animation, drawing, film, and narrative. I attended the Pre-College Program (NHSGA) in 2015 and that amazing summer was the main reason why CMU was my first choice college as an undergrad; it just felt like coming home! A few of my favorite things about summer in Pittsburgh: the crackle of cicadas, lush greenery, taking buses to yummy restaurants, the Carnegie Museums, movies on Flagstaff, Kennywood, and lots of bunnies all over campus! To me, the best part of the CMU experience is that it’s designed to push you in all directions: socially, academically, and creatively. You earned this exciting adventure so make it memorable! It's an opportunity to try something new, strike up a conversation, find independence and confidence in yourself…you are the hero in this new journey and we are super excited to mentor you along the way.

Danny Cho -
Residential Advisor

DannyCho
Class: Sophomore
Major: Design

I am studying design at Carnegie Mellon to save people's lives and build communities. I also enjoy playing piano, drums, and singing, which is the reason that I am in Joyful Noise, a Christian A Capella group on campus. In Joyful Noise, I went to UPMC to sing for the patients to encourage them. In addition, after coming to Carnegie Mellon's School of Design, my interest in drawing grew and led me to also join Tartan Newspaper, the official school newspaper, as an art staff. At Carnegie Mellon, I was exposed to many people and groups that broadened my vision about different ways of saving people. I look forward for 3 more years to come.

Emily Knott -
Residential Advisor

EmilyKnott
Class: Sophomore

My CMU experience has allowed to experience so many events and new experiences that would have otherwise been unavailable. I have made lasting friendships and gotten a chance to be independent. Through Women@SCS I've received support, advice and made friends through their big sister program. For me, Pittsburgh has been an area of endless things to do. I love to go out and try new restaurants (the food scene here is incredible). Furthermore, the activities on campus are endless. I've been able to take part in many events including puzzle hunts and volunteering at a CMU run math competitions.

Hi! I’m Helen, a rising junior in design. I’m from Pittsburgh but because my dad was a diplomat, I grew up in not only the States, but Canada, Russia, and South Africa as well. Other than design, a huge part of my CMU experience so far has been singing in my a cappella group, Counterpoint. It was my lifelong dream to be in an a cappella group and although CMU can be a struggle at times, singing with some of my closest friends always helps me de-stress. Other than a cappella, I'm also a part of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and Design League. In my free time, I enjoy photography, playing badminton, eating pasta, and cracking bad puns.

Hi! My name is Jade and I'll be an RA for CMU Pre-College 2018! My CMU experience is definitely unique because during my first week at CMU, I became very close friends with several upperclassmen. In CMU, everyone is friendly and open, which allowed me to get to know several upperclassmen. I'm part of several organizations at CMU, which includes the fencing club, Asian Student Association (ASA), and Society of Women Engineers. I'm the external activities chair for ASA and an IM ultimate dodgeball champion. I especially love CMU because Pittsburgh is a very good college town with unlimited opportunities. My favorite thing about Pittsburgh is the food. I’m an Andrew Ambassador, so I give campus tours, lead panels, and help out in the admissions department. When I’m not doing work, or participating in all of those activities, I love exploring Pittsburgh! I’m a vegetarian trying her best to become vegan so exploring unique restaurants is one of my favorite things to do in the city. I’m really excited to get to know all of you and can’t wait for a great summer!

Mary Emily Landers -
Residential Advisor

MaryEmilyLanders
Class: Sophomore
Major: Theatre Design and Production

A big part of what has made my Carnegie Mellon experience unique has been joining Students for a Democratic Society and becoming an active member in Greek Life. Both of these opportunities have allowed me to branch out from my major and college, guiding me towards new interests that I can’t wait to get more involved in during upcoming years. There is so much on campus to do, from taking advantage of the gym after a long day of classes or hanging out with friends by the Fence. If I ever get off campus, I love exploring Pittsburgh and getting to meet all the incredible people across the city and finding new places to go with friends!

While being born in New England, I moved to Florida at a young age. Despite growing up in a smaller town setting away from the stereotypical big city, I really enjoy Pittsburgh. Along with the professional opportunities, Pittsburgh has a thriving coffee culture that has let me go on weekly expeditions around town to varying coffee shops and fully immerse myself in the local culture.

I like to do ~circusy~ things, so I often go over to the South Side to visit the aerial silks studio. I also enjoy juggling and acrobatics. I love exploring Pittsburgh and I always joke that I know my way around here more than Rochester, the city where I grew up. I guess I got one good thing out of public transportation. My favorite place in Pittsburgh is either Point State Park or the Cathedral of Learning.

Veronica Lopez -
Residential Advisor

VeronicaLopez
Class: Senior
Major: Viola Performance and Music Education

I figured out that CMU was a special place while attending the Pre-College program in 2014. The student body here is what make CMU what it is. Everyone has a story and I've loved learning from everyone that I have crossed paths with. Here at CMU, I am a member of Fringe, on the Sigma Alpha Iota executive board, and an Orientation Counselor for the Orientation program. I also barista on the weekends when I have spare time! The thing I love most about Pittsburgh is that we have our very own symphony orchestra. As students we get discounted tickets, all we have to do is hop on a bus for 20 minutes and next thing you know, you're in Heinz Hall watching the symphony! Other than that, I don't think I can narrow down why I love this city so much. It's home.

William Torres -

Hello! My name is William Torres. I am 19 years old. I am from Lancaster, PA, and I study Music Composition. I am also Puerto Rican and Christian. Ever since I could remember, Music and I have been inseparable. I am a proud a Music Geek®! In high school, I partook in Marching Band (where I was Drum Major for 2 years), Orchestra, and Choir (where I premiered the first piece I ever wrote). To say that I am still able to participate in ensembles here at CMU is truly a blessing. I am in the CMU Chorus, Kiltie Band, and an acapella group called The Originals, where I am the Artistic/Music Director. What I love about Pittsburgh is the amount of culture I am exposed to. There are new friendships to make and new things to try and see. Here, I am able to express myself.

Zeja Copes -
Residential Advisor

ZejaCopes
Class: Sophomore
Major: Art and Creative Writing

The thing I love most about CMU is how easily it lets me weave my different interests together, academic and otherwise. As an aspiring animator, I live to explore the intersection of art and written narratives; getting to do that through my major program has been so much more fun than I could've hoped for. My first musical experience was getting to play a bass drum in the Kiltie Band, and I can't wait to do it again this fall. As someone who mostly grew up in Georgia, getting used to the Northeastern winter again took some time - but the holiday show at the Phipps Conservatory more than made up for it.
