I have always admired the quote attributed to Louis Pasteur - “chance favors the prepared mind.” I believe he meant that very few things are achieved by luck. Instead, the well-educated person will more often than not recognize the importance of an event as it presents itself. A breath of knowledge is essential to understanding environmental issues and sorting through the possibilities. Environmental issues are complex and decisions are driven by a myriad of forces: scientific, engineering, economic, social, and political. The more society is environmentally aware the easier it will be to find solutions, inform our decision makers, and communicate to all stakeholders who might be affected by the solutions and decisions. Through knowledge “chance” can favor the individual and society.
