2017-2018 Financial Aid Instructions

Step 1: Complete the 2017-2018 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at (required for federal financial aid programs)

    • Carnegie Mellon's Federal Code is 003242
    • Apply as soon as possible after October 1
    • Sign your FAFSA electronically using your FSA ID assigned by the Department of Education (if you do not already have an FSA ID you can create one when logging into
    • The FAFSA must be completed, received and processed before completing the following steps

Step 2: Complete the FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool

    • This is the easiest way to provide your tax data while completing the FASA and ensures your FAFSA has accurate information

Step 3: Complete the Federal Verification Process (required for all Africa students)

    • Complete the Verification Worksheet for Dependent Students (pdf)
    • Submit required information with the worksheet including tax documens and income information (taxed and untaxed)
    • The student and one parent must sign and date the worksheet
    • If student or parents filed a U.S. Federal Tax retrun, then you are required to submit a Federal Tax Return Transcript (
    • If student or parents are required to file an Income Tax Return in a country other than the U.S., a copy of a foreign tax return and tax information translated into U.S. dollars on a U.S. tax return must be provided to CMU (the translated tax return must be signed by student/parent and a tax accountant)
    • Forms may be faxed to 412-268-6551 or emailed to (note: please removed social security numbers from all electronic transmissions)

Step 4: Complete Attestations in order to finalize the application process

    • Log in to the Financial Aid Portal within Student Information Online (SIO) to complete attestations (select 'Financial Aid Status/Award' under the 'Finances' tab in SIO)
