Carnegie Mellon University

TechNights is a free STEM outreach program targeting female students from grades 6-8, which is hosted by Women@SCS in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). TechNights aims to promote gender diversity in computing and encourage the next generation to pursue a career in STEM. Through fun and interactive activities, we expose middle-school (6th-8th grade) students in the Pittsburgh area to cutting-edge, innovative science and technologies such as machine learning, computational biology, and robotics.

TechNights learning sessions occur every academic semester taking place on Wednesday evenings at CMU campus from 7 pm-8:30 pm. This spring’s sessions will be in-person only, beginning March 13, 2024, and ending April 3, 2024.

Each TechNights session features activities such as guided programming, biological experiments (e.g. DNA extraction from strawberries), or maze-solving games. We will guide students in discussions that lead to a better understanding of topics that may sound difficult to grasp — reinforcement learning, computational complexity, sequencing technology, etc.
