Career Planning

Carnegie Mellon University’s Career & Professional Development Center (CPDC) provides a comprehensive range of services, programs and materials for students to think about their career exploration, professional development and employment assistance. As students move through their second and third year, many are pursuing internships or summer experiences. The CPDC helps students focus on three phases of career development:

  • mySelf — The first step to any career search is figuring out who you are and what you stand for. Students can utilize mySelf, an online, free, self-guided assessment to help determine skills, strengths and values.
  • myStory — Once students determine their unique values and skills, it’s time to craft their story for employers. This includes working on their resume, cover letter, interview skills, LinkedIn and more.
  • myConnections — The final step is for students to grow their network to learn about opportunities. This can include activating their personal network, searching for open positions on Handshake (the Carnegie Mellon job board), or attending a career fair.

As a parent or family member, you not only play a role in your own student’s career development, but you can get involved to help other Carnegie Mellon University students learn about your profession. Please consider volunteering through the Tartan Talks or Take a Tartan to Work program.
