Stephen Brockmann

Professor of German

Stephen Brockmann explores the relationship between literature and culture as it relates to German national identity. His research focuses on:

  • German Studies, which combines the study of literature with history and politics.
  • Nuremberg and how Germans have imagined it as a cultural and spiritual capital city.
  • How German intellectuals and writers, in the immediate aftermath of World War II, confronted one of the most difficult complex problems: the complete defeat and devastation of Germany, the crimes of the Hitler dictatorship, the onset of the Cold War and the nation's political divide.
  • The literary consequences of Germany's reunification.
