Transportation & Mobility

Everyone would like a faster, easier, safer commute with improved mobility. CMU's Metro21: Smart Cities Institute takes existing systems — roads, buses, walkways — and makes them work better. The resulting improvements are immediately apparent to city residents.

Sensors and cameras mean the traffic light knows how many cars and pedestrians are waiting. Dashboard-mounted smartphones make trash trucks do double duty by filming road conditions. Artificial intelligence and computer algorithms turn all this data into real-time recommendations for traffic signal timing, road repair, snow plow routes and transit planning.
