Lunch and Learn: The Fundamentals of Smart Cities with Santi Garces

Join us for Metro21 Lunch and Learn with Santi Garces, Director of Innovation and Performance of the City of Pittsburgh entitled "The Fundamentals of Smart Cities".

When: Friday, May 3, 2019

Location: Hamburg Hall Room A301

Time: 12:00 - 1:00 pm

The Smart Cities arena has been dominated by conversations around smart street lights, smart traffic and smart parking solutions in the past few years. On the other hand, conversations around privacy and ethics around the deployment of algorithms and artificial intelligence, especially those that leverage resident data have drawn attention towards unexpected challenges, particularly as some of these technologies could disproportionately affect vulnerable communities. Can we step back and refocus the conversation around the core goals of a smart city, by going back to the fundamentals of the mission and value of a city? What are the lessons learned and what does this mean for the future? Santiago Garces, Director of Innovation & Performance of the City of Pittsburgh, will discuss the goals of Smart Cities with the hope of identifying core challenges that could set the agenda for the future conversation about Smart Cities.

Lunch Provided!
