Driving Disaster Response with Autonomous Vehicle Technology

Are autonomous vehicles the answer to optimizing natural disaster response? In an article for Axios, Metro21: Smart Cities Institute Executive Director Karen Lightman highlights the way AVs might play a role in a more connected, safer future for disaster response efforts.

Mobile disaster detection and response technology is already in existence and more is being developed. These tools, some of which are outlined in the Axios article, already exist on connected devices and may be integrated into connected vehicles as a short-term solution. However, Lightman explains that advanced computing mechanisms in AVs could provide the ultimate opportunity for collecting and transmitting critical information in times of disaster for optimized responsiveness and increased human safety.
