Predicting Friction and Wear

Friction between moving parts and the subsequent deterioration of their surfaces is still thought to result in a majority of material failure around the world. Despite this pervasiveness, a robust, predictive framework which can accurately model the deterioration of surfaces remains to be found. This stems from the inherent complexity which takes place at the small scales of real contact.

The PFTL constructs in-house modeling frameworks in order to predict fiction and wear of real surfaces. The models are coded from the ground-up with a focus on building physics based frameworks free from curve fitting. These frameworks are then tested one-to-one against basic experiments before scaling up to industrially relevant contacts.
