Multiphysics CFD and Fluid Structure Interaction

Real world engineering problems are often complex in that they involve multiple modes of physics. This often makes it difficult isolate the governing dynamics experimentally. With the advances in high-performance computing, multiphysics modeling will be a key tool for scientific discovery.

The PFTL has developed an in-house multiphysics software tool named the Particle-Surface Tribology Analysis Code (P-STAC). It employs computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the discrete element method (DEM), and computational tribology in order to model the destruction of surfaces, dynamics of particles, and fluid-structure interaction of bodies in sliding contact. P-STAC is being used to help elucidate emergent phenomena in particle-fluid-solid interaction applications.
